Turandot, the icy, but ultimately passionate princess, was a role that Maria Callas had sung on stage 24 times in the early years of her career. In 1957 she made this complete recording, now once again released on LP. She fills the character with mystery and allure before Turandot’s transformation through the power of love in the opera’s final scene. In the contrasting role of the self-sacrificing Liu, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf sings with pathos and finesse, and ‘Nessun dorma’ is rendered with panache by Eugenio Fernandi as Prince Calaf. The forces of La Scala are conducted by Tullio Serafin, who played a major role in shaping Callas as an artist.
